    FIRST MOTOR CONTROL SUMMER SCHOOL

We invite bright and open-minded graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and
young professionals to apply for admission to the First Motor Control Summer
School (MCSS). The MCSS will be a 4 to 5 day event in early July 2004 (the week
    of July 5-11).

We plan to bring together 5-6 faculty and 20-30 students selected from the pool
of applicants. The event is open ONLY for advanced graduate students who plan
to be motor control researchers, equally advanced postdoctoral fellows, and
    young professionals.

The program will involve LECTURES, ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSIONS OF HOT TOPICS (a few
examples:"What does the spinal cord do?", "What are internal models and is
there evidence of their presence in the central nervous system?", "Is the
equilibrium-point hypothesis disprovable?", "What is a synergy and what is a
non-synergy?", "Ways to use and abuse the dynamic systems approach", "What can
motor control offer health professionals?" etc.) , and discussions of ISSUES
RAISED BY THE STUDENTS, FOR EXAMPLE RELATED TO THEIR CURRENT OR PLANNED
    PROJECTS.

There will be no tutorials; the students should know basic anatomy, muscle
physiology, neurophysiology, biomechanics, basic calculus, basic operations
with vectors and matrices, statistics, etc. The style of the lectures and
discussions will be frank and open.

    TUITION: NONE!!!

Each participant will pay his/her expenses. There will be no tuition and/or
fees, and the faculty will receive no compensation for their participation. All
participants will get a formal certificate to help them get reimbursed through
whatever means they have at their disposal.

    SITE:

To be determined. The meeting will be somewhere in relative wilderness, in a
small hotel in Central Pennsylvania (with easy connections to one of the major
    airports).

    FACULTY:

The current list of faculty includes:

Roger Enoka, University of Colorado, Boulder
    Mark Latash, Penn State
    Mindy Levin, University of Montreal
    John Scholz, University of Delaware
    Dagmar Sternad, Penn State
    Vladimir Zatsiorsky, Penn State

If you would like to participate in the First MCSS, please e-mail a letter of
interest to Mark Latash (mll11@psu.edu) that includes a statement of personal
goals, a brief description of your current projects, and a c.v. with the list
    of publications and presentations.

THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 1, 2004.
