READER/PROFESSOR IN SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCES (BIOMECHANICS/MOTOR CONTROL)

The School of Sport and Exercise Science is a dynamic institution with a long history of success and innovation in both curriculum design and research. Research activity is strategically led by The Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences. Together the Institute and School have been awarded of top ratings for research (RAE 5*) and teaching (QAA 24) and we are the only Sport and Exercise Science Department in the UK to hold maximum rankings in each category. As part of our strategic development, the following senior post is now available to suitably qualified candidates. You will lead novel projects linking biomechanics and motor control. The role will be a key function in developing research in clinical aspects of human movement. You will be expected to play a major role in the development of research programmes in the area, facilitated by new research premises provided under Science and Research Infrastructure Funding. Below is my earlier message on Biomch-l (June 2003) which provides additional details about our latest facilities.
The Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences (Liverpool John Moores University) has received the highest rating (5*) in the last Research Assessment Exercise of the United Kingdom. The Institute has now received funding to establish a dedicated Movement Function Research Laboratory.
The mission of this state-of-the-art laboratory is to assess movement function, dysfunction, and rehabilitation with a focus on movement re-training. The multidisciplinary team has an exceptional mix of expertise covering biomechanics, gait analysis, musculoskeletal injuries, and motor control.
The equipment includes a software driven moving platform together with a virtual reality video screen (www.e-motek.com), and a complete clinical motion analysis system (www.vicon.com) with video, force platforms, analogue inputs, and EMG. The unique combination of equipment allows a precise control and assessment of dynamic stability.
The aim of this message is to inform potential partners with a view to identify collaborative research topics leading to joint grant applications. The envisaged target areas are orthopaedics (foot disorders, orthotics/prosthetics, physiotherapy), gait disorders (tripping/falling, development), neurological conditions (Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, stroke).
