    Post-Doctoral Position
Neural Control of Movement and NeuroRehabilitation

    The University of Iowa

    Description:
A Post-Doctoral Scholar position is available for August
    1st 2004 in the
Biodynamics Laboratory, Department of Exercise Science
    at the University of
Iowa. The focus of the Biodynamics Laboratory is on the
    neural control of walking
as well as the use of Functional Electrical Stimulation for
    the restoration of
walking following spinal cord injury or stroke. Current
    research projects include
investigations of the motor cortex involvement in the
    neural control of obstructed
walking, the mechanisms involved in the long-term effect
    of repetitive electrical
stimulation of peripheral nerves on spasticity and strength,
    simulation of walking
following a neurological insult. This work combines the
    areas of neurophysiology
and biomechanics and includes projects designed to have
    clinical impact on the
treatment of walking following spinal cord injury or stroke.
    Opportunities exist for
participation in ongoing studies, the development of an
    independent line of
research, as well as collaboration with other faculty who
    specialize in motor
control, neurorehabilitation, motor learning, and reflex
    function. The candidate
will be expected to design and conduct experiments,
    analyze data, prepare
manuscripts for publication, and participate at national
    level conferences.

The position is presently limited to one year. It may be
    extended depending
upon the availability of additional funding. The salary will
    be commensurate with
    qualifications and experience.

    Qualifications:
The successful applicant will possess a recent PhD or MD-
    PhD degree in motor
control, biomechanics, neurorehabilitation, or a closely-
    related field with special
interest in problems associated with human gait.
    Experience with motion
    analysis systems, electromyography, evoked potentials,
    instrumentation,
computer programming and clinical settings are highly
    desirable but not essential.
He/she will have excellent interpersonal communication
    skills and work habits,
the ability to work independently, be academically
    motivated in this area, and
have a willingness to work in a team consisting of other
    researchers in neural
control of movement, physical therapists, as well as with
    exercise science and
engineering students. Candidates must be motivated and
    willing to combine
theoretical and clinical approaches in their studies.

Environment and Facilities: The University of Iowa
    (www.uiowa.edu) and the
Biodynamics Laboratory offers opportunities to work with
    students and
researchers from many disciplines including Exercise
    Science as well as
    Biomedical Engineering. The Biodynamics Laboratory
    offers access to a
movement analysis system (Optotrak 3020), 16 channels
    EMG and footswitches
    system (Delsys Bagnoli-16), a Force-Plate (Bertec), 32
    channels EEG (Biosemi
Active II), Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Magstim
    Bistim^2), Cortical and
    Peripheral Electrical Stimulation (Digitimer D185-Mk.Iia
    and DS7A (3))), and
    musculoskeletal modeling software (SIMM, Dynamics
    Pipeline, SD/Fast,
Musculoskeletal Modeling in Simulink). Furthermore, an
    ankle muscle stretcher
and treadmill for obstructed walking are being developed.

Interested applicants should email Dr. Michel Ladouceur
    (michel-
ladouceur@uiowa.edu) a detailed statement of interest,
    names and contact
information of two references, and a URL linking to a
    current CV and list of
    downloadable publications.

The University of Iowa is an Affirmative Action/Equal
    Opportunity Employer.
Woman and minority applicants are encouraged to apply.
    Hiring is contingent on
eligibility to work in the United States.

Application will be accepted until the position is filled.
