  • Session on biodynamics at IMAC Conference - looking forinterested authors

    Dear BIOMCH -L subscribers,

this e-mail is to draw your attention to the yearly IMAC conference (International Modal Analysis Conference), organized by the Society for Experimental Mechanics. (www.sem.org)

Modal Analysis is a tool used in dynamics to characterize the dynamic properties of a system (or structure). In simple words it aims at identifying the way the structure vibrates (resonance frequencies, the vibration shape associated to them and the vibration "decay" when let free). The purposes are various, ranging from system identification, avoidance of operational problems, system enhancement, etc.

So far the field has been focussing mainly on civil, automotive and aerospace structures (building, bridges, cars, rockets, satellites,...), but in the recent years a new target structure has gained importance: biological systems.

I had a chance myself to present my research at the last IMAC conference: I am a PhD student working on the parameters identification of the human pelvis for diagnostics purposes, by means of standard dynamics tools.

My work was welcomed with great interest, due to the peculiarity of the structure under investigation and due to the appreciation of a new set of challenges, which arise when dealing with biological structures (no blueprints, subject variability, limited accessibility and last but not least the inherent extreme complexity).

The interest was such, that it was suggested that I organize a session on biodynamics for the next IMAC conference, to be held in Orlando, Florida, from January 31 to February 3, 2005.

Anyone of you who is investigating biological systems (bones, muscles, cells, organs, ...) from a dynamic point of view, or using dynamic tools, and who is interested in discussing his/her work in a somewhat different arena, please contact me BEFORE THE END OF MARCH. I will then get back to you with detailed information about the procedure to follow.

It would be nice if we could promote a new way of thinking in the dynamic as well as in the biomechanical world, linking them together.

Thanks and good luck in your research
    Nadine Conza
