    "Compatibility of active implants with medical imaging systems –
    biomechanical effects"

    Pain is the single most common reason patients seek medical care. In
    United States, approximately 5 million Americans are disabled by back
    problems. Chronic pain accounts for more than 100 million workdays lost
    for men alone, and at least 40 million Americans suffer from chronic
    recurrent headaches. Intrathecal infusion systems inject the medication
    (e.g. for pain, cancer treatment etc.) directly to the spinal cord. For
    that reasons, small doses are required (typically a ratio 1:300) compared
    to oral or intravenous methods. In this project the next generation
    medical devices for pain treatment will be developed and its compatibility
    with existing imaging technologies and effect on surrounding tissue
    evaluated.

    Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Fellowship position in the
    Computational Biomechanics Group at the M.E. Müller Center for Orthopaedic
    Surgery, University of Bern. The group is involved in a variety of
    research and industry projects where appropriate methods (numerical
    analysis combined with experiments) are used to study current problems in
    basic and clinical medical science. The successful applicant will join a
    project-team directly involved in the development and validation process
    of the device.

    Candidates with an PhD or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering or a
    closely related field should apply. Experience with any of the following
    would be a distinct advantage: imaging technology and analysis (CT, MRI),
    CAD and finite element analysis, and mechanical/biological testing
    equipment and procedures. Excellent spoken and written English as well as
    knowledge of German or French is a distinct advantage. A competitive
    stipend is offered and will be commensurate with qualifications and
    experience. The position is available immediately.
