The Department of Agricultural & Biological Engineering at Mississippi
State University seeks a new Head to lead the department in furthering
its solid tradition of excellence in research, education and extension.
Mississippi State University is a comprehensive land-grant institution,
and the department has strong programs in agricultural/environmental
engineering, precision agriculture, biomedical engineering, pre-medical
studies, agromedicine, biomass-biobased energy and agricultural
technologies. The department consistently attracts many of the top
academic students at the university and has experienced significant
increases in enrollment in its biological engineering, biomedical
engineering and agricultural technology programs. There are 8 teaching
and research faculty, 3 extension faculty and approximately 250
undergraduate and 20 graduate students. The university has shown its
commitment to the continued success and growth of the department through
the approval and funding for construction of a new 50,000 square foot
building. The Head of the Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Department is responsible to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences, the Dean of the Bagley College of Engineering, the
Director of the Extension Service, and the Director of the Experiment
Station. The Head provides overall leadership, direction and
administration for teaching, research, and extension functions. The Head
is the liaison between department personnel and university
administrators and has the responsibility for coordinating the budget
and managing personnel. The Head is expected to establish and maintain
working relationships with other units in the university, clientele,
government agencies, and professional groups and is expected to actively
participate in developing extramural support for the department. A
candidate must have a doctorate in engineering and an outstanding record
of accomplishment. The candidate should be eligible for a tenured, full
professor appointment based on a strong record of research, teaching,
and service in Agricultural Engineering, Biological Engineering or
related field. The Head is expected to be an outstanding leader and to
have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and teaching/learning
excellence. The position requires fiscal and management skills for
enacting a futuristic vision and a broad understanding of the generative
horizons in agriculture, biology, and engineering. The candidate is
expected to align essential internal and external units and personnel to
expand the financial resources and success of the department. Other
desirable qualifications include registration as a Professional Engineer
and experience in evaluating teaching, research, and extension. Salary
will be commensurate with training and experience. For consideration,
