    Post-Doctoral Fellowship

M.E. Mueller Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics
    University of Bern
    Bern, Switzerland

"Novel Healing Technologies in the Treatment of Spinal Disorders"

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral fellowship in the Biomechanics
group at the M.E. Mueller Institute for Surgical Technology and
Biomechanics, University of Bern. The group comprises a multi-disciplinary
research team focused on spine biomechanics, with projects in the areas of
implant design and evaluation, computational modelling and in vitro
characterisation of the interveretbral disc, soft-tissue mechanics and
tissue engineering. The successful applicant will join a program focused on
the development and evaluation of novel implantable devices for the
treatment of annular tears and/or nuclear defects. Research topics covered
within the program include the development of new tissue- and organ
culturing methods, biocompatibility testing of proposed implant materials,
characterisation of the tissue response to bioactive implantable materials,
and in vitro biomechanical testing of injured and treated discs.

The position is available immediately. Candidates with a PhD in Biology,
Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field should apply. Experience
with any of the following would be a distinct advantage: cell biology,
biochemistry and molecular biology. Excellent spoken and written English
is required. Knowledge of the German language is not required but would be
advantageous. A competitive stipend is offered and will be commensurate
with qualifications and experience. Funding is available initially for
three years, and the successful applicant will be provided the opportunity
to further develop their own independent research program within the
    institute.

Interested candidates should send their resume with a statement of research
interests, three references and university transcripts to:
