  • PhD Student position available - University of Bern

    Ph.D. Studentship

M.E. Mueller Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics
    University of Bern
    Bern, Switzerland

"Femero-Acetabular Impingement as an Initiator of Hip Joint Degeneration"

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Biomechanics group at
the M.E. Mueller Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics,
University of Bern. The group comprises a multi-disciplinary research team
with projects in the areas of orthopaedic implant design and evaluation,
the development of new techniques for orthopaedic surgery, computational
modelling (finite element analysis), soft-tissue mechanics and tissue
engineering. The successful applicant will join a project aimed at
evaluating current hypotheses of the mechanical link between acetabular
labrum pathology and the onset of hip joint degeneration. Through an
interdisciplinary approach, methods will be developed for co-registering CT
and MRI three-dimensional image datasets to facilitate patient-specific
estimates of joint range of motion, the internal mechanical environment
within the cartilage layers of the pathological hip will be simulated
during labrum impingement, and the effectiveness of proposed treatment
strategies will be evaluated by simulating the post-operative correction.
Research will include laboratory testing and computational modelling.

The position is available immediately. Candidates with an MSc or
equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely
related field should apply. Experience with any of the following would be a
distinct advantage: mechanical testing equipment and procedures, Labview,
CAD and FEM software and image analysis. Knowledge of the German language
is not required but would be advantageous. Funding is available for three
    years.

Interested candidates should send their resume with references and
    university transcripts to:
