  • Chair in Biomedical Engineering

Centre for Biomedical Engineering, School of Engineering, University of
    Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, UK

The School of Engineering invites applications for a Chair in Biomedical
Engineering. This challenging professorial appointment is central to the
ambition of the University and the School to build on its existing strong
reputation for biomedical engineering. Currently, the major elements of this
discipline within the School are based in the Centre for Biomedical
Engineering. This Centre has its roots in the 1960s, when it was one of the
first to offer higher education in this area in the UK.

The present research of the Centre is divided into six main areas:

    Human Movement
    Functional Electrical Stimulation
    Neural Interfaces
    Laboratories on a Chip
    Osseointegration
    Blood Flow and Vascular Grafts

The research areas are complemented by a very well established postgraduate
(MSc) taught programme in Biomedical Engineering and a more recent
undergraduate (MEng/BEng) programme in Medical Engineering. The MSc
programme is fully accredited by the UK Institute of Physics and Engineering
in Medicine (IPEM) for its National Health Service (NHS) professional
training scheme. The undergraduate programme is accredited by the
Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Short courses in aspects of biomedical
engineering are also currently being reviewed.

Further information on the Centre for Biomedical Engineering can be found at
    www.bmesurrey.org.

The appointee will be expected to continue the successful development of the
work in the Centre for Biomedical Engineering, while at the same time
fostering and leading new developments to ensure that the biomedical
engineering activity throughout the School is at the forefront in its field.
The appointee will have a strong track record in research, with supporting
clinical and industrial links, in line with the University's strategy for
advanced research and teaching in healthcare.
