  • ASB Mentoring Program

At the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB) annual meeting in Portland,
Oregon (Sept 8-11) we will initiate the first annual Mentoring Program. The
goal of this program is to optimize the educational and professional
experience of students attending the conference.

Anyone attending the annual meeting can participate. We are currently
seeking students and mentors who are interested in participating in the
program. If you would like to participate, contact one of the coordinators
of the mentoring program (see below). The coordinators will find suitable
matches between students and mentors based on research interests and/or
    special requests.

We envision that the following type of interactions between the student and
the mentor will take place at the ASB meeting:
    1. The mentor will introduce the student to colleagues and help the student
    establish a professional network.
    2. The mentor will spend a lunch or dinner with the student discussing the
    student's educational and/or career objectives.
    3. The mentor will share career experience with the student.
    4. The mentor will attend the (poster or podium) presentation of the
    student and provide constructive feedback.

Please contact one of the coordinators of the mentoring program before
August 23, 2004. In your message, please include the following:

    1. Your contact information (name, mailing address, email address, phone
    number, etc.).
    2. A brief (one paragraph) description of your research interests.
    3. Your career stage.
    4. Students: Do you have any special requests? Perhaps you know of a
scientist that is coming to the conference whom you would like to have as a
    mentor.
    5. Mentors: Do you have any special expertise that may be of benefit to
    students?

We hope that you share the ASB Executive Board’s enthusiasm for the
Mentoring Program. Please pass this information to your fellow students and
    scientists.
