Director, School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences

The Virginia Tech/Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering
and Sciences (SBES) seeks the founding Director of the School. SBES is the
result of a unique cooperative endeavor between Virginia Tech (VT) and Wake
Forest University (WFU). The SBES mission is to generate and disseminate
knowledge through research and education to improve human and animal health
by cooperate advancements in engineering, science and medicine. There are
numerous advantages of this collaborative model. Wake Forest provides unique
support to the effort through its top ranked medical school and wide range
of research interests. Virginia Tech has a highly ranked college of
engineering, a well known college of veterinary medicine, and strong
research programs in related areas throughout the university. The two
universities are in relative close geographic proximity. SBES offers M.S.
and Ph.D. degrees in Biomedical Engineering (BME). These degree programs are
designed to promote and facilitate unique collaborative interactions between
both faculty and students at VT's College of Engineering (CoE), the
Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM), and the
    WFU School of Medicine (WFUSM).

We seek candidates with a recognized research program in one of the focus
areas of the School, who have administrative experience, and who have the
interest and drive to build the School into a nationally-recognized
biomedical engineering program. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in engineering
or a closely related field of science, meet the criteria to be appointed as
a full professor with tenure in one of the departments within the VT College
of Engineering, and document ability to work with life scientists and
    physicians.

Experience with distance education is desirable. The Director position is a
12 month appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with
    qualifications.

Virginia Tech, the land-grant university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, is
located about 45 miles west of Roanoke in the scenic hills of southwestern
Virginia. There are 21,000 full-time residential undergraduates and 6,250
graduate and professional students enrolled both on- and off-campus
throughout the state. With annual research expenditures of about $170
million, Virginia Tech consistently ranks among the top 50 research
universities in the United States. The engineering departments involved are
consistently ranked within the top 25 nationally. The CoE enrolls
approximately 5,500 undergraduates and 1,800 graduate students. VMRCVM is
one of 27 veterinary medical colleges in the United States, and it offers
comprehensive educational programs, provides advanced clinical care for
clients throughout the region, and conducts a variety of animal and
biomedical research programs. Further information about SBES, the
University, the CoE, and VMRCVM can be found at www.sbes.vt.edu, www.vt.edu,
www.eng.vt.edu, and www.vetmed.vt.edu. Information about the town of
    Blacksburg is available at www.blacksburg.va.us.

Screening of candidates will begin on November 15, 2004 and will continue
