Post-doctoral research fellowship positions funded by a Veterans Administration
Medical Center Research Enhancement Award Grant on Stroke Disability Reduction
and Disease Prevention are available July 2005 in the Baltimore VAMC.
Interdisciplinary research training opportunities for Ph.D. post-doctoral
positions include novel studies of task-oriented exercise intervention studies,
motor learning, neural plasticity, and CVD risk factor modification in Veterans
disabled by Stroke. Research studies investigate the molecular and
genetic-epidemiological mechanisms underlying stroke risk, the insulin
resistance syndrome, vascular, skeletal muscle, and neurophysiologic
adaptations with exercise training. Interdisciplinary research team includes 25
faculty with regional affiliations and core facilities centered at Baltimore
VAMC, along with its primary affiliate, University of Maryland School of
Medicine. Collaboration and mentoring comes from faculty in Neurology and
Rehabilitation Medicine, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, Medicine
and Geriatrics, Nursing, and Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine. Facilities
include a New VA Human Performance Lab, a new Veterans Administration
Rehabilitation Research and Development Center of Excellence in “Exercise and
Robotics in Neurological Disease”, a VA Geriatrics Research Education and
Clinical Center with a 5,000 ft2 VA Exercise Research Center and extensive
metabolic, molecular genetics, and muscle biology research infrastructure.
Faculty mentors are also linked to a Claude D. Pepper Functional Independence
in Older Americans Center that includes a focus on exercise and aging with
disability of stroke, a Genomics Program, and Joslin Diabetes Center that
provide strong environments for translational research.
Post-doctoral fellows will participate in weekly research seminars, journal
clubs, and courses in research ethics and human subjects protection. Mentors
are assigned to fellows according to research interests and preferences of
fellows toward desired areas of expertise. Fellows are guaranteed two years of
funding with a third year possible. The fellowship offers mentored academic and
research training to develop independent research skills to obtain funding.
