  • ABD/ADDuction convention

    Dear all

I am currently investigating a new passive marker model designed to increase
accuracy of knee abd/adductiom motion. I have several papers that describe
knee motion as measured by intercortical pins and electrogoniometry, but not
all of them make clear whether abduction is positive or negative in their
results. In particular for the paper:

Chao, EY. Laughman, RK. Schneider, E. and Stauffer, RN.
Normative data of knee joint motion and ground reaction force in adult level
    walking.
    1983
Journal of Biomechanics. Vol. 16 No. 3. pp. 219-233

the vertical axis of the graph is labelled "abd/add" but no mention is made
in the text as to which is negative and which positive. This will be quite
important for comparison with our results. In general the research
convention seems to be that abduction is negative, a supposition that is
supported by Visual3D software when the thigh is defined as the reference
segment and the shank as the movement segment.

If anyone knows the definitive convention or the convention for the specific
paper referenced above i would be hugely grateful.

    Regards
