4th Annual Conference
of the
Australian Society for Biomaterials
in conjunction with
Workshop on Orthopaedic Implant Retrieval
January 30 - February 1, 1994
Coogee Beach
Sydney, Australia
FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
******************
Call for Abstracts and Registration Form
Conference Programme
********************
The conference will take place on Monday 31st January to Tuesday 1st
February. Technical Sessions will focus on the following areas:
* Cardiovascular applications of biomaterials
* Biomedical polymers
* Dental and orthopaedic applications
* Natural biomaterials
* Ophthalmic applications
* Surface interactions
* Ceramic and composite biomaterials
The format will emphasise poster presentations and ample time will be
allotted to poster sessions for full discussion of work presented. A
selection of speakers will be invited to give oral presentations. If
there are several posters originating from a single group, then one person
may be invited to lecture on the work of the group. This will provide the
opportunity for a more rounded presentation of the different research
activities than is possible in short talks, while giving opportunity for
detailed discussion of specific aspects in the poster sessions. The
decision on mode of presentation (oral or poster) rests entirely with the
scientific committee.
Abstracts
*********
Abstracts should be typed or laser printed, 12 point, single spaced on
plain white paper to fit within a space 170mm wide by 265mm long. All
abstracts will be subject to critical review and must be substantive and
include sufficient detail to allow a fair evaluation. The original plus
two copies of your abstract must be received by 1st November, 1993.
Authors will be notified of the status of their paper by 1st December,
1993.
Student Prize
*************
The Student prize will be awarded to the best scientific poster presented
by an ASB student member. The poster must present work which was
predominantly carried out by the student. The prize will be awarded
following a judging of all student posters in the presence of the
presenters.
Workshop on Orthopaedic Implant Retrieval
*****************************************
This one day workshop will take place on Sunday 30th January and will
feature invited speakers expert in key areas of implant retrieval.
Retrieval analysis is of growing importance in orthopaedics, and other
areas where long term performance of devices is required. Australia
offers particular regulatory and demographic advantages for implant
retrieval programmes. The workshop will bring together the government,
professional and commercial organisations required to develop coordinated
implant retrieval programmes. The workshop will consider the roles and
responsibilities of all parties (clinical, industry, regulatory and
research) and the resources required to implement a worthwhile programme.
The proceedings will be published in the journal _Biomaterials_.
Invited Speakers include:
Professor Peter Herberts (Professor of Orthopaedics, University of
Gothenburg, Sweden. Responsible for Swedish National Registration of
Total Hip Arthroplasties)
Pat Campbell (Director, Implant Retrieval Laboratory, Joint Replacement
Institute, Los Angeles )
Dr Jack Lemons (Head of Department of Biomaterials, Division of
Orthopaedic Surgery. University of Alabama at Birmingham)
Professor Cliff Hughes (Chairman, Therapeutic Devices Evaluation
Committee)
Margaret McGee (Implant Analysis Scientist, Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery and Trauma, Royal Adelaide Hospital)
Dr Derrick Beech (Director, Therapeutic Devices Branch of the Therapeutic
Goods Administration)
This workshop is endorsed by
Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
Therapeutic Devices Evaluation Committee (TDEC)
