The Department of Biomedical Engineering is seeking an outstanding scholar
for a new faculty position in neural engineering at the assistant/associate
professor level depending upon the level of past accomplishment. The
Department has identified neural engineering as a major growth area and
seeks candidates with the ability to develop independent research programs
supported by external funding. This new faculty member will be able to
build upon existing departmental strength in neuromuscular engineering,
neural/vision engineering, neural plasticity and tissue engineering.
Qualifications for this position include an earned doctorate in biomedical
engineering or related field and the abilities to develop and conduct
significant neural engineering research and to teach at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels. All areas of neural engineering
including, but not limited to, computational modeling, signal processing,
nerve regeneration, and neural repair will be considered.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 9 tenure track faculty, two
full-time research professors and two full-time instructional faculty.
Student enrollment includes 250 undergraduates, 80 M.S. students and 14
Ph.D. students. The department offers an excellent research environment
including a new building containing the departmental core offices, teaching
studios and 10 faculty research laboratories. A second nearby facility
contains the department's suite of wet laboratories. NJIT is one of three
public research universities in New Jersey and is located in the University
Heights section of Newark along with the flagship campus of the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Rutgers University-Newark
campus. Together, these three adjacent universities exceed $100 million in
annual external research.
Neural engineering activities in the department are enhanced through
collaboration with the Rutgers Center for Molecular and Behavioral
Neuroscience, and the UMDNJ departments of Neuroscience, Neurosurgery,
Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurology. A 3T fMRI system is available at
UMDNJ for research. Within several miles are two additional research
facilities. The East Orange VA Medical Center houses a major neuroscience
research center and the Kessler Rehabilitation Institute houses the Kessler
Medical Research and Education Corporation, a non-profit research facility
that includes rehabilitation engineering, neuroscience and cognitive science
research. Opportunities also exist for collaboration with local industries,
which include many of the nation's largest biomedical and pharmaceutical
firms and dozens of start-up companies. In addition, the New Jersey
Commission on Spinal Cord Research and the newly formed New Jersey
Commission on Brain Injury Research are potential sources of grant
sponsorship.
