Dear BIOMCH-L Readers,
The Research Department at Lyndhurst Hospital is establishing a
dedicated research facility for spinal cord injury rehabilitation
research. We propose to name the facility, "The A.T. Jousse
Research Laboratory". For those of you not familiar with the
history of spinal cord injury rehabilitation, Dr. Jousse was a
pioneer physiatrist in Canada who founded Lyndhurst Hospital in
the mid-1940s. His innovative philosophy and techniques with
regard to spinal cord injury rehabilitation have influenced a
whole generation of clinicians in Canada and abroad. Although he
is now retired, he maintains an interest in the growth of
clinical research into spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
The A.T. Jousse Research Laboratory will be developed in phases,
beginning with emphasis on kinesiological research, specifically
biomechanics and exercise physiology. In support of this, the
current inventory of equipment will allow us to do two-
dimensional, video-based kinematic analyses, some EMG analyses
and, on the exercise physiology side, O2-uptake analyses.
Lyndhurst Hospital has committed some financial support as well
as providing space for the laboratory. The laboratory is
intended to be a self-financing entity, deriving its income from
externally-funded research grants and from donations or corporate
sponsorship. However, as you all know, it takes personnel, time
and equipment to establish a solid reputation for a laboratory.
We are curious if, amongst the readers of this listing service,
there might be individuals/companies with biomechanics and/or
applied physiology equipment which is not being used, and who
would be interested in donating it to our facility. Based on
our experience, there are probably many older, yet functioning,
pieces of research equipment out there not currently in use for
one reason or another. Rather than have it stored away, gathering
dust, this may be a way to keep it operational and at the same
time, help us get our laboratory up and running that much sooner.
The Research Department at Lyndhurst Hospital is supported by a
charitable foundation, the Lyndhurst Foundation, and the possibility
of receiving a tax deduction certificate for a donation exists.
Specific details related to this can be provided by the Lyndhurst
Foundation to anyone seriously considering our request.
Thank you,
