Position Announcement: Research Technician, full-time position
The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at Boston
University, in conjunction with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
at Boston University School of Medicine, is currently accepting
applications for a position of Research Technician.
This position is funded primarily through an NIH program grant
entitled "Molecular Mechanisms of Skeletal Repair." This grant funds
three major projects and three core facilities, one of which is
dedicated in part to structural and mechanical analyses of skeletal
tissues. The individual filling this position will be responsible for
carrying out many of these analyses, which include mechanical testing,
standard radiography and micro-computed tomography imaging. The
micro-computed tomography imaging facility also services several other
major projects within the College of Engineering and School of Medicine
at Boston University, and the technician will be responsible for
performing much of this additional imaging.
The departments of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and
Orthopaedic Surgery house an active research program in Biomechanics
that includes investigations of genetic and mechanical influences on
skeletal repair and regeneration, and studies of structure-function
relationships in skeletal tissues and whole organs. These research
activities are supported by a total of 3100 square feet of laboratory
space fully equipped with materials testing systems, wet chemistry
benches, tissue processing and imaging facilities, and computational
facilities.
Responsibilities of the research technician include:
- conducting mechanical tests on whole bones and other biological
tissues;
- performing standard radiography micro-computed tomography scans, and
image analysis
- carrying out data reduction and statistical analyses;
- maintaining the relevant laboratory equipment;
- managing a multi-user database of standardized histomorphometric and
mechanical outcome measures.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelors degree in an engineering- or science-related field is
required.
- Previous laboratory experience in science and/or engineering is
highly desirable.
