A Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Biomechanics is required to work on an
ARC-funded research project investigating the usage of the prosthesis of
lower limb amputees fitted with conventional sockets or an
osseointegrated implant. Applicants with relevant engineering or
clinical background in biomechanics of lower limb amputees are
encouraged to apply.

Salary: AUD$51 785 to AUD$55 583 pa

DUTY STATEMENT
Purpose of Position
This position is funded by an ARC Linkage grant (LP0455481): Innovative
approach to design a new osseointegrated implant for transfemoral
amputees with better resistance to fractures. The Postdoctoral Research
Fellow will be part of a team that is characterizing the usage of the
prosthesis of lower limb amputees fitted with either a conventional
sockets or an osseointegrated implant. This project involves
investigating the load applied on the residuum in experimental
conditions (gait lab and standardized environment) and during daily
living activities. Applicants with a strong engineering and/or clinical
background in biomechanics of lower limb amputees will be considered for
this position. The successful candidate will join an internationally
recognized multi-disciplinary team including industry partners and
clinicians such as biomechanists and engineers. The appointee will work
under the direction of Dr Laurent Frossard (School of Engineering
Systems), Prof. Mark Pearcy (School of Engineering Systems) and Dr James
Smeathers (School of Human Movement Studies).
Duties include:
• Design and undertake experiments to study the load applied on the
residuum of lower limb amputees fitted with a conventional sockets or an
osseointegrated implant.
• Conduct reviews of literature relevant to the research project.
• Prepare and publish research findings derived from this project in
top-ranked journals, seminars and conferences papers.
• Provide regular written and verbal research reports as directed by the
project team leaders or industry partners located in Australia and
overseas.
• Maintain complete and accurate research records.
• Develop improvement to the design of device for osseointegrated fixation.
• Provide advice and guidance to graduate engineers and research
assistants associated with the research program.
• Undertake other appropriate duties relevant to the research project as
specified by the project team leaders.
• This position might require extensive domestic and overseas travelling.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
1. Completion of a PhD in Biomechanics or in related areas.
2. Knowledge and experience of biomechanical analyses of gait.
3. Demonstrated ability to design and undertake research experiments in
Biomechanics.
4. Demonstrated ability to work independently to complete research tasks
associated with the project including the accurate organization and
maintenance of records.
5. Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively with people with diverse
professional and cultural backgrounds.
6. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by publishing
research outcomes and results in relevant journals and/or conference
proceedings.
7. Demonstrated ability to provide guidance to graduate engineers and
research assistants.
Desirable:
1. Applied research in biomechanics of transfemoral amputees.
2. Knowledge and experience in inverse dynamics.
3. Knowledge and experience in portable sensors (e.g.: Force sensor,
data logger).
4. Practical experience in programming with Matlab software.
5. Knowledge of orthopedic implants.
