Ph.D. position on haptics in robot assisted surgery
(Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, Division
    of Biomechanics and Engineering Design)

ARISER project (a Marie-Curie network, sponsored by the European
    Commission): Augmented Reality in Surgery

Topic: Research into haptics in robot assisted surgery and its integration
    in the human-machine interface.

    Detailed description:
This project (Ph.D. position of 36 months) will build upon the experience
gained in the framework of a previous project on kinaesthetic feedback and
enhanced sensitivity in robotic laparoscopic telesurgery. These
developments allow to enhance the human stiffness discrimination techniques
through a teleoperator system. A framework has been conceived and tested
for impedance reflection teleoperation with on-line impedance shaping.
The Ph.D. candidate will perform research into methods for improved
per-operative soft tissue impedance measurement and the development of
sensor technology to achieve this objective. This includes sensors for
haptics and tactile feedback. Intra-operative data will be interpreted in
view of allowable tissue deformation and damage in order to optimize the
surgical workflow. Tools will be developed to evaluate the performance of
haptic feedback. Feedback control will be optimized to enhance the sensory
awareness of the surgeons. Particular attention will be paid to optimal
    man-machine interfacing.
The successful candidate will have to demonstrate a solid background in
control theory. He/she collaborates with colleagues in the robot research
group of K.U.Leuven and clinical partners in the University
hospitals. He/she must be ready to stay abroad for training and research
fellowships in other centres of the ARISER consortium. The ARISER network
wants to be an equal opportunity employer.
