The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush
University Medical Center is currently seeking a
full-time research engineer specializing in
biomechanics. We are currently accepting applications
for this immediate opening and will continue until the
position is filled.
Our laboratory conducts interdisciplinary studies
covering a broad range of hard and soft connective
tissues: including exploration of mechanisms of low
back pain and testing of new technologies in the
treatment of this chronic disease using both cadaveric
experimentation, as well as in vivo imaging of
patients, and basic science investigations on soft
tissue mechanics, healing, and repair using animal
models, as well as studies on human joint stability
(e.g., shoulder, elbow, and knee) including the
effects of surgical procedures. The lab also performs
industrial-supported biomechanical studies in
collaboration with orthopedic surgeons and other
researchers in the department.
Duties will include conducting biomechanical testing
of biologic tissue, and collection and analysis of
data. The research engineer will also be responsible
for training and mentoring students, residents, and
fellows in biomechanical experimentation. Prior
experience using material testing systems (Instron,
MTS, etc.) is required. Knowledge or the ability to
learn the data acquisition/motion control software
LabView is desirable. Additionally, statistical data
analysis and the ability to provide assistance with
written submissions (e.g., grant proposals,
manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, IRB protocols,
etc.) is a plus.
Qualifications:
Candidates with MS degrees (or BS degrees with
significant related experience) in Mechanical
Engineering, Biomechanics or related engineering
disciplines with a particularly strong background in
biomechanical testing of biologic tissues are
encouraged to apply. Good oral communication skills
and the ability to work either independently or within
a multidisciplinary team are essential. The ideal
candidate will have strong organizational and
technical skills. Salary level will be commensurate
with previous experience and within institutional
guidelines.
