PhD Studentship in Comparative Shoulder Biomechanics
Applications are invited for an EPSRC CASE PhD Studentship at the Centre for Rehabilitation and Engineering Studies, School of Mechanical and Systems Engineering, University of Newcastle upon Tyne in collaboration with the Animal Health Trust, U.K.
The focus of this project is to examine the functional implications of the adaptations in shoulder morphology in bipeds and quadrupeds using computational modelling. Scapula-thorax interaction differs greatly between two- and four-legged animals but continues to be poorly understood in both. This project would involve creating a musculo-skeletal quadrupedal shoulder model by adapting our existing human shoulder model to incorporate equine anatomy using medical imaging and dissection studies. The student would also be expected to collect kinematic and kinetic data of the human and equine thoracic limb and thorax, to allow them to analyse the force transmission and joint stability in the shoulder, and the influence of muscles and structures such as the clavicle, which is absent in horses.
This project will be run in parallel with existing complementary projects on muscle modelling, human shoulder biomechanics, equine forelimb modelling and ventilation. The successful candidate would be based in Newcastle upon Tyne but some work will take place at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket for which a full UK-valid driving license is preferred.
The studentship is available for three years and includes a tax-free stipend of approximately £14,000 per annum plus tuition fees according to EPSRC terms and conditions and subject to eligibility criteria, including UK or EU citizenship or residency status.
