    Dear Colleagues:
    This is the first announcement and call for abstracts for the 14th Annual
    Symposium on Computational Methods in Orthopaedic Biomechanics (the
    “pre-ORS” meeting). Detailed information on the meeting format and
    registration, maps to the meeting site, and the sponsors for the meeting
    can be found on the symposium website at:

    Location and Registration:
    The symposium will be held on Saturday, March 18th, 2006 on the Campus of
    the University of Illinois, Chicago in the Department of Mechanical
    Engineering, 1043 ERF at 842 West Taylor Street, Chicago, IL 60607. The
    site is within convenient access via public transit to the meeting location
    of the Annual Meeting of the Orthopaedic Research Society. Registration
    will begin at 8 a.m., with presentations starting at 9 a.m. and continuing
    through the afternoon in a single-session format. Each presentation will
    be 10 minutes long with 5 minutes allotted for questions. Pre-registration
    for the meeting can be performed electronically at:

    We strongly encourage those interested in attending to pre-register for the
    symposium online through the meeting website so that we can adequately plan
    to accommodate everyone. Interest was great enough for the last symposium
    to require that registration be closed prior to the date of the symposium.
    As usual, registration and participation are free of charge.

    Objectives:
    The objectives of the symposium are to present the most current thinking on
    the impact of computer assisted techniques in the field of orthopaedic
    biomechanics, to educate scientists and researchers in the use of these
    techniques, and to promote the use of computer technology in biomechanical
    research. In keeping with the tradition of the symposium, this meeting is a
    forum for “junior researchers” to present their ongoing research involving
    computational work of any nature related to orthopaedics. Therefore,
    presentations are expected to be given by the student/postdoc primarily
    responsible for the research. The symposium will provide ample opportunity
    for personal interaction with faculty and other symposium participants and
    will be a unique educational experience for the presenters. The pre-ORS is
    the premier international forum on the use of a new breed of computer based
    tools in orthopaedic biomechanics.
    Typical issues that have been discussed in the past include: computer
    modeling of whole bones from quantitative computed tomography scans; finite
    element formulation and implementation of non-linear constitutive models
    for soft tissues; development and numerical behavior of algorithms for
    simulation of bone remodeling; computer modeling of bone-implant systems;
    contact problems; micro-mechanical modeling of tissues; and motion/dynamic
    analysis of the skeleton

    Abstracts:
    Abstracts are requested for all areas of computational research of interest
    to the general orthopaedic biomechanics community. As in the past, this
    meeting is a nonarchival forum for graduate students and postdocs to
    present their ongoing research. Presentations are expected to be given by
    the student/postdoc primarily responsible for the research, not by the PI.
    The deadline for submitting abstracts for the symposium is Friday, December
    16, 2005. Abstracts not exceeding one page should be sent via email as
    attachments in .pdf format to submissions@pre-ORS.org. Any questions
    concerning abstract submission can be sent to this email address as well.
    Please be sure to include abstract title, list of authors, and authors'
    affiliation(s). By submitting an abstract, it is understood that you will
    present your work in person if your abstract is accepted, and that this
    work is not being presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society meeting.
