    Job Description:
The US Department of Veterans Affairs seeks to hire a talented biomechanical engineer with a recent PhD to study the relationship between gait biomechanics and bone density in healthy adults. The position will be as a VA Associate Investigator, which is a mentored position for individuals with less than 3 years of post-doctoral experience who wish to develop the skills needed to become independent investigators. The position will be based at the Bone & Joint Rehabilitation Center in Palo Alto, CA ( Our facilities are equipped with a state-of-the-art gait laboratory, bone imaging facilities, computer resources. and a wide array of additional research facilities.

The project will involve an assessment of gait biomechanics during walking, measurements of bone mineral density, estimation of hip joint contact forces using novel musculoskeletal computer simulations, and measurements of habitual, free-living walking histories. The goal of the research is to provide a scientific basis for health policy recommendations on walking exercise and osteoporosis prevention in healthy adults.

This work will be performed in collaboration with Gary Beaupre, PhD and Thomas Andriacchi, PhD. The Associate Investigator will also interact with other investigators at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System and with graduate students in the Biomechanical Engineering Division at Stanford University (

The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, biomechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline. We are seeking applicants with a knowledge of human movement analysis or computer modeling of musculoskeletal dynamics and some programming experience (C, Matlab, etc.) An understanding of bone densitometry and orthopaedic biomechanics is also very helpful.
