  • PhD Scholarship Aged Movements: University of Birmingham

    Hi again,

A second PhD Scholarship is currently available in the School of Sport and
    Exercise Sciences, University of Birmingham:

Title: The Effects of Aging on Movement Performance

Supervised by Dr Martin Edwards, Dr Derek Peters & Chris Hughes
    (M.Edwards.1@Bham.ac.uk for more details).

Applications are invited for a PhD Scholarship in The Effects of Aging on
Movement Performance. The project will assess how different aged participant
groups perform in complex upper and lower limb movement tasks. In
particular, the project will determine whether there are any common
indicators in movement decline with increased age for both types of limb
    action.

The Scholarship is funded under a joint University of Birmingham and
University of Worcester collaboration scheme. As a result, the student will
be based in the University of Birmingham, but will carry out their research
across both universities. The upper-limb movement tasks will be carried out
in the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, University of Birmingham using
a five-camera Vicon motion analysis laboratory. The lower-limb / full body
movement tasks will be carried out in the University of Worcester¹s Motion
Analysis Research and Rehabilitation Centre and School of Sport and Exercise
Science using a twelve-camera Vicon motion analysis system.

Both Schools of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham
and Worcester have recently invested in large-scale multi-million-pound
facilities to improve movement performance research. The scholarship will
fund research training that will use the new facilities and provide a unique
and exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of research in this area. In
addition, the University of Birmingham has an excellent Graduate School that
provides first-rate research practice and instruction. More details about
the PhD programme can be found at:
    http://www.sportex.bham.ac.uk/postgraduate/phd.htm

The Scholarship will be for three years and have an approximate annual value
of £11000 plus fees. The starting date is aimed at January 2006, although
requests to commence study at a later date will be considered. Applicants
require a good Honours degree (at least 2.1 or equivalent) in an appropriate
science. Experience in working with the elderly or with the use of motion
analysis equipment would be an advantage. The closing date for applications
    is 7th December 2005.

Informal enquiries / applications can be made by emailing Dr Martin Edwards
    (Admissions Tutor: M.Edwards.1@bham.ac.uk)

    Many thanks
    Martin
