  • Position Announcement: POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

    NUFFIELD DEPARTMENT OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY
    UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, UK

    POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT

    ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF GRADE 1A:
    Salary range: £20,044 - £30,002 pa

We are looking for a post-doctoral research assistant to join the Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre, a leading orthopaedic research group which is part of the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. You will be supervised by Dr Richie Gill (Orthopaedic Engineer) and Professor David Murray (Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon) to focus on the kinematics of knee replacement. An appreciable proportion of knee replacements have poor functional outcome or pain. The reason for this is not well defined, but is likely to be related to patello-femoral kinematics. The kinematics of the patello-femoral joint both before and after knee replacement are difficult to assess. Our aim is to develop a technique using an open MRI scanner to assess patello-femoral kinematics during exercises in both normal and replaced knees. This will require appreciable developmental work to suppress the influence of metal artefact. We hope to develop a tool for assessing individuals with a
poor outcome after knee replacement and also for assessing and developing new designs of knee replacement. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, surgeons and radiologists as well as having some patient contact. A related project will be concerned with RSA (Roentgen Stereophotogrammetric Analysis), and part of the responsibilities of the post will be to perform analysis using RSA on joint replacement.

You should have good communication skills (written and verbal) and be able to work as part of a team. You will have a doctorate in Engineering or an allied numerical discipline, and significant research proficiency. A working knowledge of Matlab would be useful and strong computational and programming skills are required. Experience in the fields of human joint modelling would be beneficial, but not essential. The position is for 1 year in the first instance with the possibility of extension and is funded by Furlong Research Foundation.

If you wish to apply for the post, four copies of a CV with three referees (one of whom should be your current employer) and details of previous research experience should be sent, quoting reference HF06001, to The Administrator, Nuffield Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Headington, Oxford, OX3 7LD, from whom further details are available (E-mail: recruitment@ndos.ox.ac.uk; Fax: 01865 737640). The closing date for applications is Monday 30th January 2006. Interviews will be held on the afternoon of Monday 20th February 2006.

PLEASE DO NOT REPLY DIRECTLY TO THIS EMAIL, ADDRESS ALL ENQUIRIES TO recruitment@ndos.ox.ac.uk
