The following research posts are available as part of the EU funded DESSOS project which is aimed at developing decision support software for orthopaedic surgery and in particular, total knee replacement. The main objective of this project is to develop software tools that provide orthopaedic surgeons with the ability to pre-, and intra-operatively assess the optimal prosthetic configuration and position in order to maximise the effectiveness of the procedure and therefore to offer the best possible surgical outcome for the patient concerned, based on data captured from the patient. The project, which is being lead by the University of Southampton, involves collaborations with ZIB and Charité, University Medicine in Berlin (Germany), Leiden University Medical Centre (The Netherlands), University of Zaragoza (Spain), DePuy (UK), Finsbury Orthopaedics (UK), ESI (France) and PERA (UK).
In order to achieve this, at Southampton, we need to develop rapid computational models capable of predicting the kinematics and contact pressures within total knee replacement based on patient data collected either pre-operatively or intra-operatively.
Post 1 (Ref. No. 05R0517C)
The research fellow will be required to develop explicit finite element models of the lower limb which are capable of simulating level gait and other activities. The research fellow will be required to work closely with the other project partners. In particular, the researcher will interact with co-workers at Charite University, Berlin, to develop appropriate loading and boundary conditions to simulate level gait. Applicants are expected to hold at least a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline and a PhD in a relevant area is desirable. A working knowledge of finite element analysis is essential and in particular explicit finite element formulations. Additional knowledge of biomechanics, particularly related to total knee joint replacement, would be advantageous.
Post 2 (Ref. No. 05R0518C)
The primary objective is to attempt to predict the likely kinematics a patient will have following total knee replacement surgery using a combination of musculo-skeletal and finite element models. Due to a number of uncertainties in the input to the models, we propose to predict an envelope of performance for each patient. The research fellow will be required to implement stochastic techniques (eg reliability methods) in conjunction with finite element models, to account for these uncertainties and to predict the likely envelope of performance. Applicants are expected to hold at least a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent discipline and a PhD in a relevant area is desirable. A working knowledge of finite element analysis is essential and as is a working knowledge of stochastic modelling techniques (e.g. reliability theory). Additional knowledge of biomechanics, particularly related to total knee joint replacement, would be advantageous.
Post 3 (Ref. No.05R0519C)
The research fellow is required to develop a software environment that will enable the automatic generation and analysis of patient specific FE models of the lower limb. Ideally, the candidate should have a degree in computer science or a related discipline and have an excellent working knowledge of programming languages (eg C++)
All three post will be for 30 months. The salaries will be in the range of £23.457 - £28.850 per annum.
