Position Offered: Research Biomotion Laboratory Engineer

Job Description:
The Rehabilitation Research and Development (RR&D) Center is a research
facility investigating movement dysfunction in orthopaedic and
neurologically impaired populations and houses nine Principal
Investigators with a research focus on bone and joint rehabilitation.
Center funding is derived from the VA Rehabilitation R&D service, NIH
and the Whitaker Foundation and other extramural agencies. Active
collaborations exist between the RR&D Center and motion labs at
Stanford University in the Departments of Bioengineering and Mechanical
Engineering.
The Biomotion Laboratory is a Core laboratory shared among the RR&D
Center Principal Investigators. At this time four PI’s employ the lab
for a variety of motion applications. The lab is equipped with eight
high-speed digital motion capture cameras (Qualisys), three force
plates (Bertec and AMTI), and a 16-channel EMG system (Motion Lab
Systems). Among software available is Qualisys Trac Manager and Visual
3D.
The candidate chosen for this position will serve as a Biomotion
Laboratory Engineer on RR&D projects and will use a variety of complex
engineering skills, working with multi-disciplinary teams to find
solutions to difficult, previously unsolved rehabilitation engineering
problems. The candidate is expected to act as technical lead within the
Biomotion Laboratory providing technical support and expertise in
biomechanics and 3D motion capture for basic and clinical research
studies. The candidate will also implement and conduct research and
development projects. Other duties will include, but not be limited to
the following:
Activities
· Acts as technical lead within the Biomotion Laboratory providing
technical support and expertise in biomechanics and 3D motion capture
for fundamental and clinical research studies. Implements and conducts
research and development projects.
· Responsible for collection, processing and quality control of
specialized computerized motion analysis measurements including
kinetics and EMG of subjects undergoing testing in the Biomotion
Laboratory.
· Ensure that the acquisition, analysis and verification of data
are appropriate, consistent and accurate for each study subject.
· Develops and coordinates resources for interdisciplinary projects
with teams of engineers, physicians, research scientists,
biomechanist/kinesiologists, therapists.
Quality Assurance
· Author, monitor and maintain technical protocols according to
appropriate guidelines
· Ensure that operational procedures are maintained and developed
to reflect best scientific, engineering and clinical practice and
appropriate guidelines.
· Set up and maintain a program of quality assurance covering the
use of movement analysis equipment.
Equipment & Operations
· Responsible for the overall management of the laboratory’s
technical and computer facilities
· Ensure appropriate organization, maintenance and backup of data
for maximum accessibility.
· Oversee the installation, use and maintenance of laboratory
equipment.
· Make recommendations for selection and purchase of laboratory
equipment.
· Manage supplier relationships
· Develop specialized computer programs designed to enhance gait
and movement analysis capabilities.
Professional
· The ideal candidate will be expected to keep up-to-date with the
latest technical and scientific developments and their potential
applications in the field of gait and movement analysis and
rehabilitation.
· This position will oversee engineering functions of the RR&D
Biomotion Laboratory by providing technical support to RR&D Center
investigators and reports to Director of the RR&D Center.
Qualifications:
· Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical Engineering
or related engineering field and experience with motion capture and
analysis in a research and/or clinical setting. The combination of a
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field with a Master’s
degree in Biomechanics, Kinesiology, or Human Movement Science is
acceptable.
· Strong computer skills. Experience with motion model building
(e.g., Vicon Body Builder, Visual 3D) and computer programming skills
(e.g., LabView. Matlab, Vicon BodyBuilder, Visual 3D) for creating
custom modeling and analysis programs would be an asset.
· Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
· Experience working with disabled subject populations; and
· Experience with data acquisition techniques.
· As a mandatory requirement, all applicants must have US
Citizenship (resident aliens and permanent residents are not
eligible).
· Ability to work well in an inter-disciplinary environment
through interactions and collaborations with engineers, physicians, and
other scientists and medical personnel.
