  • References for my research

I am a graduate student in the department of Biomedical Engineering at Iowa
State University, Ames, IA 50011 pursuing my master of science degree. My
interests lie in rehabilitation and biomechanics. I have recently grossly
defined my research project for my thesis. I wish to study both able-bodied
and disabled individuals while propelling a wheelchair in a stationary
configuration, which is yet to be determined. I will use EMG's to monitor
the electrical activity in various muscles during propulsion, along with VO2
and heartrate measurements to determine what differences, if any, are
occurring between the two groups (i.e. muscle compensation, etc.) I need
information in two areas. 1) what muscles would be appropriate to monitor
for wheelchair propulsion and 2) applicable references for EMG's and
wheelchair propulsion and the relationship between the EMG signal and force
generated within the muscle. I would also gladly take any suggestions that
you may have about my research project. Thank you very much.
