PhD Research Studentship in the School of Sport and Education at Brunel University, UK
The School of Sport and Education at Brunel University, West London, are seeking applications for a full-time PhD position to commence October 1, 2006. The successful candidate will examine biomechanical, muscular and immunological factors influencing tibialis anterior/lower leg pain in collaboration with the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court, Epsom Surrey UK.
DMRC is the Armed Forces' main rehabilitation unit and specialises in musculo-skeletal rehabilitation and sports injuries in the military population. The emphasis is on successful return of patients to full military duties after occupationally related injury and illness. Exertional lower limb pain is a major cause of functional impairment in the military and this project will address this issue with the ultimate aim of producing an effective treatment for the condition.
The research will be carried out at both Brunel University and the DMRC. The School of Sport and Education at Brunel University has newly-built laboratories with highly specialised, modern equipment including: a 7-camera real-time motion analysis system, multiple force platforms, telemetered EMG (synchronised with force and kinematics acquisition), an isokinetic dynamometer, ultrasound imaging facilities, and access to MR imaging. This equipment is additional to the rehabilitation and research facilities of the DMRC.
Applicants from a variety of backgrounds will be considered, but a good knowledge of human biomechanics would be beneficial and the applicant must be a UK or EU citizen. Some knowledge of human immune responses, and muscle and tendon imaging or modelling would also be considered favourable. Applicants should hold at least an upper II class Honours degree, although a Masters level qualification would be looked upon favourably. The successful applicant will receive financial support of £15,000 per annum, which includes a bursary of £12,000 tax-free for three years, plus payment of fees, research costs and travel/conference assistance.
