The Materials Processing Research Centre (MPRC) of Dublin City University (DCU) is seeking to recruit a number of PhD students with backgrounds in mechanical, manufacturing, materials or bioengineering, in materials science or in biotechnology. It is preferable (but not necessary) to have some experience in one of the following: rapid prototyping techniques, powder metallurgy, cell culture techniques, mechanobiology, or ceramic materials science. The projects are funded under a Marie Curie Early Stage Research Training programme.
The projects are concerned with novel fabrication techniques to produce bioartificial scaffolds for hard and soft tissue applications. Tissue engineering aims to produce patient specific biological substitutes to overcome the limitations of traditional solutions for damaged tissue, such as lack of suitable donor organs or diseased cells. The scaffold aids the delivery of cells when they are implanted and/or provides temporary mechanical support to newly grown tissue. Advanced fabrication methods may be the key to producing scaffolds with customised and controllable geometries and internal morphologies. These characteristics of the scaffold are difficult to achieve using existing methods, but are important to performance.
In all seven Early Stage Researchers will work on aspects of this project at the MPRC. While distinct projects, many share raw material or application characteristics. The current four projects focus on (1) Plasma Spay of Bio-materials, (2) Three Dimensional printing; Rapid Prototyping Technology (3) Selective Laser Sintering; Rapid Prototyping Technology and 4)Cell behaviour; interaction with scaffolds.
The researcher in training position will have funding for 3 years. Due to EU regulations for Marie Curie Actions, candidates should be non-Irish nationals and preferably from an EU Member State or Associated State. The research experience of candidates must be less than 4 years (full-time equivalent). Applications from women candidates are particularly welcome.
