    PhD Studentship

    Orthopaedic Biomechanics

    Supervisor: Dr Cathy Holt

    Cardiff School of Engineering

    Starting September 2006

    Orthopaedic Engineering Research Collaboration between:
    Plus Orthopaedics
Dr Cathy Holt, Cardiff School of Engineering, Cardiff University, Wales, UK
Mr Stuart Roy, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Wales

Research in the Motion Analysis Laboratory, Cardiff School of Engineering offers valuable insights into the design and function of orthopaedic implants. Projects involve the application of advanced techniques to classify the dynamic behaviour of human joints under normal, pathological, implanted and trauma related conditions. The results of such studies provide valuable tools to aid orthopaedic design engineers, surgeons, pre-clinical experimentalists and therapists in understanding the varying patient responses to surgical implants, therapies and traumatic and injurious scenarios.

Plus Orthopaedics is funding a 3 year Postgraduate Research Project commencing September 2006.
The PhD Studentship is funded at EPSRC level (home fee rate plus stipend of 12,300 for 2006/7) and the research will involve 3D motion capture techniques, functional testing of human joints and modelling of human joint/implant interfaces.

Candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a 2.1 or above in a relevant first degree in engineering, mathematics or computing.

The studentship is open to Home, EU or OS students but funding will be at the Home fee level only.

Application forms can be obtained from the School of Engineering Research Office, email or telephone +44 (0) 29 2087 4642. Please note the reference CAH1/06 on your application.

Completed application forms should be submitted by post, along with all supporting documentation, to: Research Office, Cardiff School of Engineering, Cardiff University, Queen's Buildings , The Parade, CARDIFF CF24 3AA

The closing date for applications is 30th June 2006 for entrance in October 2006.
