FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Mechanical Engineer
ABSTRACT: The NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD is seeking a highly qualified Mechanical Engineer to perform detailed accident investigation functions that primarily involve determining vehicle motion and the underlying causes for that motion.
FULL JOB DESCRIPTION:
NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD, the world's premier independent agency for accident investigation, is seeking a highly qualified Mechanical Engineer to perform accident investigation functions that primarily involve determining vehicle motion and the underlying causes for that motion. Major responsibilities include analyzing physical evidence obtained from accident wreckage, on-scene physical evidence, data from onboard and/or ground-based recording devices, systems information, and other pertinent information to determine a time history of the vehicle motion and sequence of events; utilizing simulation and related tools to examine vehicle dynamics and reconstruct motion through the accident sequence and/or determine the cause of that motion; writing detailed technical reports of investigation findings and accident prevention recommendations to correct safety deficiencies; and orally presenting and defending technical findings in publicly attended meetings conducted by the Safety Board. A major portion of the work depends on the incumbent's technical ability in assembling factual data, in preparing specialized analyses, and developing conclusions based upon such data. The ability to write and speak effectively is essential. Skill in writing technical reports that present factual data, analysis and conclusions is required; as is the ability to explain and interpret in either written or oral presentations the views of the Safety Board to other Federal Departments/agencies, state and local officials, industry groups or associations and the general public.
In order to be considered for this position a candidate must clearly possess skills in using simulation or accident reconstruction software for analysis of vehicle dynamics, collision dynamics, crashworthiness and accident reconstruction.
The salary range for this position is $65,048 to $118,828 with a compensation package that includes retirement benefits, a 401K plan, choice of health benefit plans, life insurance coverage, 10 paid Federal holidays, vacation and sick leave, and a commuter subsidy/parking permit. Alternate work arrangements are also available.
