Three postdoctoral fellowships are offered in the Department of
Biomedical Engineering, Universiti Malaya. The areas of research are:
Tissue Engineering and Bioreactor Development (1), Medical Imaging (1)
and Bioelectromagnetics (1).
Universiti Malaya, centrally located within Kuala Lumpur, is the longest
established University in Malaysia. Nestled within the 750-acre campus,
the Department of Biomedical Engineering undertakes extensive research
activities and is the host of the bi-annual Kuala Lumpur Conference on
Biomedical Engineering. Applications are encouraged from all countries
and all nationalities. The successful applicant is assured a memorable
experience both working at Universiti Malaya and living within Malaysia.
POSITION:
Post-doctoral fellowship in Tissue Engineering and Bioreactor
Development
JOB DESCRIPTION:
As part of our expansion into Tissue Engineering at the Centre of
Emerging Biomedical Engineering Technology (CoEBET) we are commencing a
program of research and development into the production of a bioreactor
for tissue engineering. The development will be a vehicle for extensive
research into cartilage tissue engineering and offers the opportunity
for the right candidate to take a key role in the development and
direction of this exciting research programme.
The right candidate will have some knowledge of cell culture and/or
tissue engineering as well as having an understanding of mechanical
systems. The aims of this two-year postdoctoral fellowship are to
complete the development of a functional bioreactor system and to
undertake a full range of testing upon different cell types. For this
reason applications are encouraged from both biomedical engineering and
traditional cell or tissue biologists.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Tissue Engineering, Cell Biology
or related field.
* Experience of cell culture and/or tissue engineering.
* Ability to work independently and take a full part in planning.
* Dedication to research and a thirst for solving problems.

POSITION:
Post-doctoral fellowship in Medical Imaging
JOB DESCRIPTION:
One of our active research fields at the Centre of Emerging Biomedical
Engineering Technology (CoEBET) is in the area of Microwave Imaging. We
are developing a complete system to detect malignant tissues using this
low cost (as opposed to ultrasound and MRI) and painless, non-ionizing
(as opposed to X-ray mammography) imaging technique. To help us
materialize this project, we are seeking for a highly motivated and
driven individual to join our research team. The main responsibilities
include the assembly of a complete microwave imaging system and the
development ofa measurement protocol for characterizing the dielectric
properties of malignant and benign human tissues at microwave
frequencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Microwave Engineering or related
disciplines.
* Knowledge in dielectric properties of human tissues.
* Experienced user of Matlab.
* Ability to work independently.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

POSITION:
Post-doctoral fellowship in Bioelectromagnetics
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Laboratory studies have shown that electromagnetic fields (EMF) affect
cells in various ways. However, whether these effects are important in
terms of human health is still not clear. Much work needs to be
conducted before any conclusions can be reached about the relative
safety or harm of electromagnetic fields. It is one of our research
interests at the Centre of Emerging Biomedical Engineering Technology
(CoEBET) to study the effects of EMF on biological cells. We are seeking
for a highly motivated and driven individual to conduct a research in
this area. The main responsibilities are to develop a measurement
protocol to study the effects of EMF on biological cells, to investigate
the changes in cell morphology and dynamics when exposed to EMF and
finally to perform a statistical analysis on the results.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related
disciplines.
* Knowledge and interest in Bioelectromagnetics.
* Ability to work independently.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
