PhD Studentship, Centre for Biomimetics, The University of Reading
The Centre for Biomimetics of the University of Reading seeks a
well-qualified, enthusiastic person to fill a PhD position to work in the
area of insect hair mechanosensors. The studentship is fully funded by the
EU as part of the FP6-FET CILIA project in which the Centre is a partner
(http://www.cilia-bionics.org/). The studentship is for three years and is
available from October 1st, 2006. Applicants should have a strong
motivation for interdisciplinary research and the ability to work
independently.
The research involves the experimental and numerical study of air-flow
sensing hair arrays in crickets. The main aspect of the research is to
characterise and quantify the mechanical and vibrational response of sensory
hairs subjected to air-flow excitation. The student will gain expertise in
the use of various experimental (microscopy, laser vibrometry, high speed
camera, micromechanical testing) and microscopy (confocal, SEM, ESAM)
techniques and use them to characterise and quantify the biomechanical
response of the sensing system.
Applicants should have an Honours Degree (2.1 or above) in Mechanical
Engineering, Biomechanics or Physics/Biophysics and have an understanding of
vibrations, acoustics, etc. Expertise in numerical modelling, such as
Finite Elements and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics, would be an advantage.
