    Research Students in Sports Technology
PhD #5 - Biomechanics of impacts during sports

School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

    Rapid Manufacture of Sports Products

The Rapid Manufacturing and Sports Technology Research Groups have secured
two significant research grants concerned with personal protection sports
equipment and personalised shoes for sport. Up to 8 research studentships
are available starting October 2006 or soon after. The studentships are for
3 years at EPSRC funding rates and cover EU/UK fees only.

The research will be concerned with customisation of products for soccer,
martial arts, cricket, running and other sports using cutting edge
technologies. The research is supported by a consortium of collaborators
which includes leading sports equipment brands, sports governing bodies and
Rapid Manufacturing equipment manufacturers. The work will be conducted
within the Rapid Manufacturing and Sports Technology Research Groups and
excellent laboratory and computer facilities are available to undertake the
    work.

Applicants must possess a good upper second or first class degree in an
engineering or physical science subject, and appropriate experience would be
advantageous. They must be able to work as part of a large,
multidisciplinary team, have highly effective verbal and written
communication skills and if possible should be conversant with research
    methods.

The successful candidates will join a vibrant research team based within
    Loughborough
University's Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering,
which is one of the leading centres for sports equipment and rapid
    manufacturing research.

Please address informal enquiries to: Dr Chris Tuck (Tel: 01509 227568,
    e-mail: c.j.tuck@lboro.ac.uk).

Please contact Ms J R Mason, Research Administrator, (Tel: 01509 227642,
e-mail j.r.mason@lboro.ac.uk) for an application form etc.

Closing date for receipt of applications will be 1 August 2006.

PhD #5 - Biomechanics of impacts during sports - RJ01706
This research post will look at the forces involved in typical sporting
collisions across a range of sports and determine their injury potential.
This will involve correlating data from diverse areas such as the car
industry, ballistic injuries and sport. Experimental work with human
subjects, force measuring devices and high speed video will be involved
along with some computer programming to model impacts.

A good relevant degree in a physics/engineering/sports science related
discipline is required (minimum upper second class). Desirable skills
related to working with human subjects and an understanding of human anatomy
    would be advantageous.
