Two lectureships are available within the Bioengineering Science
Research Group, School of Engineering Science at the University of
Southampton. Full details of the posts and application details are
given below.
1. Lectureship in Mechanobiology and Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (job
ref: 0222-06-E)
The School of Engineering Science (SES) is seeking to appoint a
candidate to complement the existing research programme in the
Bioengineering Science Research Group. The School was awarded the top 5*
rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. The primary focus of
the group is currently orthopaedic biomechanics with particular
expertise in experimental and computational performance assessment of
devices. We are looking to diversify our activities by building on the
existing expertise available within the SES and the University. There is
significant research in the fields of regenerative medicine and the
fetal origins of adult diseases within the School of Medicine. The aim
of the lectureship is to establish a research portfolio in the general
areas of Mechanobiology and Musculoskeletal Biomechanics by combining
the unique skills available within the School of Engineering Sciences
and Medicine. Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited
to:
* Mechanical characterization of musculoskeletal tissues or tissue
engineered constructs
* Mechanical conditioning of tissue engineered constructs and
influence on tissue development
* Mechanobiology
* Simulation applied to tissue engineering or muscloskeletal
biomechanics
* Micromechanics of musculoskeletal tissues
We encourage applications from candidates who have 5* research
potential. You should have a PhD in a relevant area, a proven high-level
publication record, teaching and supervision experience, and the
enthusiasm and drive to carry out research and teaching, as well as
research leadership, supervision and coaching, in an exciting, highly
professional, multidisciplinary environment. The lectureship will be
based within the School of Engineering Sciences and the person will have
access extensive computing facilities and the Tissue Testing Suite which
is currently under construction. The lectureship is directly related to
the SES's strategic thrusts in Bioengineering and the Universities Life
Sciences Interface Initiative.
2. Lectureship in Sensing within Biological Systems (job ref: 0221-06-E)
The School of Engineering Science (SES) is seeking to appoint a
candidate to complement the existing research programme in the
Bioengineering Science Research Group. The School was awarded the top 5*
rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. The primary focus of
the group is currently orthopaedic biomechanics with particular
expertise in experimental and computational performance assessment of
devices. We are looking to diversify our activities by building on the
existing expertise available within the SES and the University. There is
a growing need to develop sensing technologies capable of short and long
term monitoring of the biological, chemical and mechanical environment
within active biological systems. There is also a need to develop
sensing technologies for the in situ monitoring of the performance of
medical devices and their interaction with the host system. The aim of
the lectureship is to develop a research portfolio in the development
and application of sensors and potential areas of interest include, but
are not limited to:
* In situ structural assessment of biological tissues (e.g.
deformation, pressure, damage, evaluation of material properties)
* In situ performance monitoring of medical devices
* Assessment of fluid flows (e.g. cardio-vascular, respiratory,
tissue engineering)
* Chemical analysis (e.g. ion release for medical devices,
metabolite concentrations)
* Biological analysis (e.g. cell phenotype, bacteria identification)
