  • PhD Scholarship - new clinical motion capture system

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANY RECENT GRADUATES
LOOKING TO UNDERTAKE A PHD RELATED TO THE
    DEVELOPMENT OF MOTION CAPTURE TECHNOLOGIES.

Centre for Rehabilitation and Human Performance Research
University of Salford, Salford, Manchester, UK.

PhD Scholarship - Tuition fees paid (at UK/EU student levels) plus
£12,300 per annum (for 3 years, rising annually with inflation) See:
    www.healthcare.salford.ac.uk/crhpr

The Centre for Rehabilitation and Human Performance Research is
working with a leading manufacturer of motion capture technology
to develop a new system for use in routine clinical gait analysis.
The new motion capture system should involve as few cameras as
possible, as few markers as possible, require no specialist
knowledge for set up or use, and accommodate known variations
between operators, such as skin marker placement. It needs to be
easy to use in a hospital or other clinical setting where space and
time are often in short supply.

The PhD will tackle the problem of maximising accuracies whilst
minimising the number of cameras, the number of markers, and the
care with which these need to be set up and calibrated.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a strong
commitment to research and a willingness to work with academic
and industry partners. He/she should have a good first degree in
Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related subject.
The skills required include: applied mathematics, ideally relating to
3D geometry and motion analysis; programming using MatLab or
a similar applications language; and experience in the planning
and execution of experimental work. He/she should have the
ability to work independently and systematically to solve technical
problems whilst keeping focused on the overall project objectives.

The project and PhD will be jointly supervised by Professor David
Howard and Dr Christopher Nester. Please make contact with Dr
Nester in the first instance to discuss your application
    (c.j.nester@salford.ac.uk).

    ACTIONS FOR APPLICANTS
