National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)
Office of Research and Engineering
Vehicle Performance Division
Washington, DC
Mechanical Engineer, GS-11/12/13/14
Vacancy Announcement #: WA-TB-6-022 (GS-11/12)
WA-TB-6-021 (GS-13/14)
Salary Range: $52,349 to $118,828 per annum
NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD, the world's premier independent agency for aviation accident investigation, is seeking a highly qualified mechanical engineer to serve as a Surface Vehicle Performance Engineer in the Office of Research and Engineering.
The incumbent serves as a Mechanical Engineer in the Vehicle Performance Division with responsibility for performing accident investigation functions that primarily involve determining surface vehicle motion and the underlying causes for that motion. Major responsibilities include analyzing physical evidence obtained from accident wreckage, on-scene physical evidence, data from onboard and/or ground-based recording devices, systems information, and other pertinent information to determine a time history of the vehicle motion and sequence of events; utilizing simulation and related tools to examine vehicle dynamics and reconstruct motion through the accident sequence and/or determine the cause of that motion; writing detailed technical reports of investigation findings and accident prevention recommendations to correct safety deficiencies; and orally presenting and defending technical findings in publicly attended meetings conducted by the Safety Board.
In order to be considered, candidates must have U.S. citizenship; a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering; at least one year of experience involving application of professional mechanical engineering knowledge and practices associated with solving problems related to vehicle dynamics, crashworthiness, collision dynamics, and simulation. A critical "must have" professional credential is skill in using simulation or accident reconstruction software for analysis of vehicle dynamics, collision dynamics, crashworthiness and accident reconstruction. Assignments frequently require ingenuity, initiative, good judgment and the ability to work well with others, within and outside of the NTSB staff.
The incumbent must be prepared to travel often with short notice and is subject to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Investigative assignments may also involve work at unusual times and for long hours at accidents sites, sometimes in remote, rugged and hostile settings. Field work may be physically demanding and may expose the incumbent to hazardous materials and possibly bloodborne pathogens.
Interested applicants should respond to the complete the appropriate vacancy announcement (# WA-TB-6-021 and WA-TB-6-022) at www.usajobs.opm.gov. Candidates must be citizens of the United States. All candidates will receive careful consideration without regard to such factors as race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or disabilities. Applications will be accepted through October 2, 2006.
Compensation package includes retirement benefits, a 401K plan, choice of health benefit plans, life insurance coverage, 10 paid Federal holidays, vacation and sick leave, and a commuter subsidy. Alternate work arrangements are also available.
