The School of Sport and Education at Brunel University is seeking two highly motivated doctoral students in the area of developmental biomechanics. The posted positions are available from January 1st 2007.
Applicants are invited for a 3-year PhD scholarship in developmental biomechanics funded by the EPSRC. The scholarship provides an annual stipend of £14,300 and covers tuition fees.
Two PhD scholarships will be awarded in the following areas:
Scholarship 1: Changes in lower limb muscle and tendon properties, and their relationship with force production during growth from child- to adulthood. A background in musculo-skeletal imaging/mechanics and force measurement is preferable.
Scholarship 2: Developmental changes in muscle mechanics and their effect on muscular force application and neuro-motor control during childhood. A strong mathematical background and computer programming skills are essential.
Both PhD candidates will be jointly supervised by Dr Thomas Korff and Dr Anthony Blazevich.
Applicants must be E.U. citizens and should have the following qualifications and abilities:
- Masters degree (or equivalent) in Biomechanics, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related area.
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to work in a research team
- Strong problem solving abilities
- Computer programming skills (e.g., Matlab and MS-excel are essential for Scholarship 2).
The subject area of Sport Sciences at Brunel University is nationally and internationally recognized as a leader in research and teaching; it is ranked third by The Guardian and fifth by The Times league tables.
The recently built Biomechanics Laboratory at Brunel University is equipped with a real-time optical Motion Analysis system, an 8-channel telemetry EMG system, four Kistler force platforms, a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer, two custom-made force pedals for use in cycling research, and a 2D ultrasound imaging system. Magnetic resonance imaging facilities are located off-campus.
