    Columbia University - Center for Orthopaedic Research



    Biomechanical Research Post-doctoral Research Fellows, Research Assistants, and Technicians, full-time needed

    The Biomechanics Laboratory, a part of the Center for Orthopaedic Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center, is currently accepting applications for post-doctoral research fellows, research assistants, and, technicians. The laboratory maintains MTS servohydraulic and Instron electromechanically material testing frames, dissection and microscopy equipment, tissue culture facilities, desk space for fellows, students and staff, and general wet lab space for specialized experiments. The primary research interests within the laboratory are in orthopaedic biomechanics related to joint function, disease, injury and repair.



    Candidates will assist with design and implementation of biomechanical experiments working in close collaboration with orthopaedic attendings, fellows, residents and biomechanical engineers and engineering students in the fields of diarthrodial joint function, soft tissue mechanics, trauma and arthroplasty. Experience on uniaxial and biaxial load frames is desired. Candidates should be able to work both independently and as a member of a team; from data collection to assisting in manuscript writing; maintaining lab equipment and dissection facilities as well as working with custom-made experimental equipment, computers, animal and cadaver tissue and performing data and basic statistical analyses.



    Research Fellows

    -Preparation and material testing of cadaveric and animal specimens and analysis of results.

    -Assist in publication of papers.

    -Provide assistance to staff and students who utilize the laboratory space and equipment.



    Qualifications:

    - BS or MS in biomedical or mechanical engineering is required.

    - Previous laboratory experience in science and/or engineering is highly desirable.

    - The interested candidate must have good analytical and writing skills.

    - Knowledge of Matlab, C++, or Fortran is required.

    - Ability to perform stress-strain analysis using FEA (ABAQUS) would be a plus.

    - Knowledge of machine shop fabrication, and electronic circuits would also be a plus.
