PhD offered in Animation of Walking
Bournemouth University, UK
An exciting opportunity is offered in using computer animation techniques to
present walking patterns recorded from stroke patients. The successful
candidate will work closely between two National Centres; the National
Centre for Computer Animation in Bournemouth Media School (
ncca.bournemouth.ac.uk) and the
National Clinical FES Centre in Salisbury District Hospital (
www.salisburyfes.com).
Studies of work will include using specialist equipment to record walks from
both normals and stroke patients, and using scoring techniques to describe
these patterns. Recorded data will be fed into a computer model to represent
the gait; this requires some novel adaptations of existing models and tests
to demonstrate robustness.
The PhD is being offered as part of a full-time bursary from Bournemouth
University. We are looking for applicants who have a first degree in
Computer Animation or in an engineering related subject with a demonstration
of excellent computing aptitude and skills (minimum degree standards 2i). An
interest in application of these types of technology to human movement or
health related fields is essential. You will be based primarily in
Salisbury, working in an environment alongside engineers, scientists,
physiotherapists and other students. The bursary is worth approximately
£12,500 per annum over the 3 years. Only UK and EU students are eligible to
apply for this bursary.
If you are interested, then please send a CV to Dr Duncan Wood at the
Department of Clinical Science and Engineering, Salisbury District Hospital,
Salisbury SP2 8BJ, along with a 300 word description of why this project
seems interesting to you. Applications should be in by 24th November please.
Dr Wood is also available to answer any questions by email
(d.wood@mpbe-sdh.demon .co.uk) or by ‘phone (01722-429121).
