1 Position Summary
The position of Research Fellow is a 2 year fixed
contract full time position
within the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports
Medicine (CHESM) in the
School of Physiotherapy, Faculty of Medicine,
Dentistry and Health Science,
The University of Melbourne. People with a variety of
academic and clinical
backgrounds will be considered for the position. These
include backgrounds in
physiotherapy, exercise and human movement science,
biomechanics and
human neuroscience. Preference will be given to
applicants with research
expertise in the measurement of human movement
including
electromyography and motion analysis using 3-D Vicon
system and force
platforms.
The person will work under the guidance and direction
of Professor Kim
Bennell as part of a multidisciplinary team conducting
research in the area of
biomechanics and motor control of gait in health and
disease as well as
therapy outcomes for musculoskeletal conditions. In
particular, the research
will focus on evaluating knee load and muscle
activation patterns in knee
osteoarthritis and their relationship to the
progression of disease. This
research is funded by a NHMRC grant.
2 Selection Criteria
2.1 Essential
• Undergraduate degree in the area of physiotherapy,
exercise science, human movement, human neuroscience
or related health discipline
• Prior research experience
• Understanding of biomechanics/neuroscience
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of a
multidisciplinary team.
• High level interpersonal skills and an ability to
interact effectively with people of all ages and
backgrounds
• Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word,
Excel, power point, statistical, graphical and
bibliographical packages.
• Demonstrated productivity including initiative, good
problem solving, judgement and organisational skills
with the ability to follow through detailed projects
effectively
• Discretion, consideration to privacy,
confidentiality and ethics, and the ability to
strictly adhere to study protocols
• Demonstrated project management skills, including
the ability to manage competing priorities and
excellent time management skills.
2.2 Desirable
• Experience with the use of electromyography, 3-D
motion analysis, force platforms, dynamometry
• Experience with Matlab
• PhD in an area relating to musculoskeletal health,
physiotherapy, exercise or human movement science,
biomechanics, human neuroscience or other relevant
area
• Experience with statistical analysis
• Current CPR/first aid qualification
Key Responsibilities include:
• Co-ordinating and conducting specific
musculoskeletal research projects under the direction
of Prof Bennell
• Recruiting and screening potential research
participants
• Ensuring project timelines and milestones are met
• Collecting data from research participants including
administration of questionnaires and testing function
using laboratory-based measurement tools including
electromyography, force, isokinetic and motion
analyses
• Regular liaison and reporting of project progress to
team members
• Data management including data entry and statistical
analysis
• Budgeting related to grants
• Laboratory organization including ensuring that the
work area is maintained in a good order, and that
consumable stocks are available
• Reporting and publishing – this includes sourcing,
retrieving and appraising appropriate literature;
compiling reports and presenting results including
preparation of manuscripts and power point
presentations
• Assisting with submission of research grant
applications and ethics applications
• Assisting with supervision of research students of
the Centre
• Assisting in teaching activities related to the
Centre as appropriate
• Attendance at departmental meetings and/or committee
membership
• Administrative functions related to the Centre and
the research programs
• Participating in annual professional development
review in accordance with University policy
• Participating in regular staff development
activities
