Applications are invited for a PhD studentship, supported by the Great
Western Research Alliance (
) and Simpleware Ltd
( ), is available in the
Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Exeter, in
collaboration with the Universities of Bristol and Bath.

Project description
The project will either:

(1) involve the application of finite element techniques to explore a
range of image based models with a particular emphasis on pre and post
clinical modelling of medical implants. This post would be suitable for
an Engineering candidate interested in computational modelling
particularly in the medical arena.
(2) look at the development of innovative software tools for use in
clinical simulations/for virtual surgery. This post would be suitable
for a candidate with a computer science background or with strong
programming skills looking at developing innovative clinical software

This is an exciting opportunity to work with an industrial body who are
leaders in the field, and with three research groups with dynamic
research cultures. The student will become highly skilled in modern
image-based meshing techniques and medical modelling. Simpleware is the
world leader in the conversion of 3D images (as obtained from MRI, CT,
MicroCT for example) into high quality Finite Element, CAD and Rapid
Prototyping models. The Universities of Exeter, Bristol and Bath have
excellent reputations and are internationally recognized in many fields
of research.

To apply for either of the posts, candidates must have a 2(i) or first
class degree and be resident in the UK or EU.
Unfortunately applications from candidates outside the EU cannot be

The studentship is for 3 years and includes a subsistence grant of at
least £12,500 per annum with all fees paid for UK / EU students.
