Position: Senior Research Engineer, Biomechanical Testing and Research
Location: South
The position is responsible for driving biomechanical performance evaluation activities of medical implants, instrumentation, and materials. This includes active participation in the product development cycle and interaction with Product Development, Marketing, Regulatory, and Operations groups. This position is also responsible for the technical management of biomechanical testing and research projects either conducted in-house or by external collaborators in universities and hospitals. Good laboratory practices, project management, creative problem solving, and solid communication skills are essential.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and conduct performance evaluation activities of medical implants, instrumentation, and materials.
Manage all aspects of performance evaluation activities from project conception to design verification testing including the compilation of technical reports for regulatory submissions and marketing support materials..
Apply technical principles to the performance evaluation of devices.
Partner with cross-functional teams in the product development cycle as a primary technical resource.
Operate biomechanical testing and general laboratory equipment to achieve project goals.
Practice and promote good laboratory practices, record keeping, and documentation in order to comply with internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
Manage biomechanical testing and research being conducted at outside facilities.
Interact with scientists and engineers within the corporation.
Analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from performance evaluation activities.
Disseminate and present test results and conclusions.
Provide technical support to Product Development, Marketing, Regulatory, and Operations.
Assist in the tracking, coordination, and oversight of external research activities.
Assist Research, Product Development, and Marketing in the development of research and publication strategy for external research activities.
Remain current with technology and testing standards within the business. This is accomplished through attending courses both on the engineering and/or technical side, and the medical side.
Provide product design advice based on conclusions drawn from performance evaluation and research activities.
Seek and analyze new technologies for potential product applications.
Constantly strive to reduce commercialization times in an effort to remain competitive in the market place.
Provide mentoring to junior staff as appropriate.
EXPERIENCE:
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field with six years of related work experience in medical device biomechanical testing, research, or product development is required. A candidate with a Bachelor or Science with eight years of experience will be considered. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
*Facility with engineering design, drafting, & GD&T
*Understanding of manufacturing & machining techniques
*Experience with operation, calibration, & maintenance of mechanical testing equipment (servohydraulic, electromechanical, …)
*Experience with sensors, transducers, and data acquisition
*Understanding of hydraulic and closed-loop feedback theory
*Understanding of statistical analysis techniques
*Understanding of good laboratory practices
Experience in biomedical engineering research
*Possession of very good communication skills (oral, written)
*Possession of solid technical writing skills
*Possession of independent, problem solving abilities
Ability to mentor junior professionals
Experience with Iiaising with regulatory bodies (e.g. FDA, …)
Experience with internal and academic publications (technical and clinical)
Ability to perform relevant searches of literature in the context of performing job duties
Ability to travel occasionally (less than 10%)
