  • Open Posn: Director, Motion Analysis Laboratory

    OPEN POSITION
    Shriners Hospitals for Children, Erie PA, is pleased to announce an
    immediate, full-time, opening for the Director of its internationally
    recognized Motion Analysis Laboratory (MAL). With a three-point Mission
    Statement that supports clinical care, research, and education through
    operating and research budgets, this opportunity is unique in clinical
    biomechanics. The successful candidate will inherit a program that is
    developing muscle actuated forward dynamic simulations to predict the
    outcome of interventions (i.e., Predictive Dynamics), and will play a
    key role in setting the future course for this biomechanics program.

    RESPONSIBILITIES
    The Director provides leadership by possessing a vision for the field of
    Biomechanics, its current applications within the medical community, and
    its potential for alleviation of suffering and restoration of functional
    mobility; acts as a subject matter expert both internal and external to
    the Shrine system; initiates development of novel ideas for the
    application of Biomechanics to normal and pathological human movement;
    pursues ideas that reflect an awareness of current and potential
    analysis capabilities, and lead to peer reviewed publication;
    establishes national and international collaborations with other experts
    in the field; applies for grant funding in clinical and basic research;
    and supervises MAL staff. The opportunity currently exists to fill an
    additional open position for a full-time, MAL Kinesiologist.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Biomechanics or related
    field, and an undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline.
    Expertise in three-dimensional, six degree-of-freedom kinematic and
    kinetic analyses is desirable, particularly of gait. Experience in
    muscle actuated forward dynamic simulations of gait will allow for
    immediate contributions to a two-year, funded study, that supports the
    laboratory strategic plan for Predictive Dynamics. Evidence of
    recognition within the field is desirable (e.g., service as an officer
    in a professional society, a reviewer for grant applications or
    scientific journals, etc.).

    FACILITIES
    The Motion Analysis Laboratory and adjacent offices occupy more than
    1500 square feet in a new wing of this 30-bed, pediatric orthopedic
    hospital. Major equipment includes a ten-camera Vicon 612 system, three
    moveable AMTI force plates, two instrumented walkers, MLS surface and
    fine-wire EMG instrumentation, an S-VHS observational video system, a
    dedicated high-speed computer network, and Visual3D modeling software.
    The city of Erie is located in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania,
    along the shores of Lake Erie, and is adjacent to rolling, tree-covered
    hills. Several universities and medical centers offer collaboration
    worldwide. Metropolitan areas in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo are
    within a comfortable two-hour drive. Additional details can be found at
    the following website, noting that Dr. Buczek has recently moved from
    the Director's position to that of a research consultant:

    APPLICATION
    Please send your curriculum vitae and a brief statement of your interest
    in biomechanics to Ms. Karen McClay at the address below. Electronic
    copies are welcome. Applications will be accepted through March 31, or
    until a suitable candidate is found. (EOE/m/f/v/h, Shriners Hospitals
    for Children maintains a drug free workplace.)
