EPSRC CASE Studentship
This is the first call for applications for an exciting EPSRC CASE
studentship based in the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College
London. The studentship will be undertaken in collaboration with
Finsbury Orthopaedics, a dynamic research led medical device company,
supplying products to many of the market leaders in orthopaedics. It is
expected that any successful applicant will spend a minimum of three
months on industrial secondment with the company, carrying out
commercial research relevant
to the PhD. The project will be supervised by an academic supervisor,
based within the College, and an industrial supervisor, based within
Finsbury Orthopaedics.
The research will focus on assessing the movement of the pelvis during
daily activities, and in particular the movement of the acetabulum (the
socket of the hip joint). Research will include assessment of existing
and innovative designs of the acetabular cup (prosthetic socket
introduced during hip replacement surgery). Research will be of a
commercial nature, and the successful candidate will be involved in the
development and testing of new orthopaedic products.
Numerical modelling will be carried out using the College supercomputer,
developing sophisticated finite element models of the pelvis, including
the effects of muscles and ligaments in controlling movement. This will
be done in close collaboration with the academic supervisor, based
within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Experimental work will be carried out as necessary within the Institute
of Biomedical Engineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and
the testing facilities available at Finsbury Orthopaedics.
It is expected that the successful applicant will come from a
biomedical, civil, or mechanical engineering background, although
applications are sought from anyone who has proven expertise in
computational modelling, and conducting lab based experiments. It is
anticipated that the successful candidate will start in the September or
October of 2007.
The studentship carries a minimum annual EPSRC stipend of £12300, plus a
significant additional contribution at the discretion of the College.
