Job Title:
PhD program in Canine Gait Analysis and Rehabilitation
Position:
The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Colorado State University in collaboration with Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver CO has a PhD position available for an academically and/or clinically oriented biomedical engineer, physical therapist or veterinarian with biomechanical experience or interest. The successful applicant will acquire research experience and training in biomechanical assessment of small animal locomotion and expertise in rehabilitation research.
Requirements:
Candidates with a Bachelors or Master's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physical therapy (PT), or DVM (or equivalent degree) with post-graduate training in orthopedics will be considered. Interest in development of a gait analysis and rehabilitation research program and experience with computer programming (LabVIEW) is helpful.
Objectives:
To contribute to a clinical research program at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital, Denver, CO and participate in focused orthopaedic and rehabilitation research within the Orthopaedic Research Center and Small Animal Clinic at Colorado State University.
Training offered:
The PhD program requires 3 or 4 years to complete and includes research and biomedical experience in a large, referral hospital (Alameda East) as well as university setting. The program is designed to provide biomechanical expertise in the objective assessment of musculoskeletal dysfunction, surgical intervention and rehabilitation. Existing equipment includes underwater treadmills, swimming pools, physiotherapy modalities, a single and dual force platform systems, high-speed video kinematics, DEXA scanner, diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, nuclear scintigraphy), and biomechanical testing equipment (MTS).
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include: appropriate graduate course work, productive research leading to a PhD degree, mentored grant writing to obtain extra-mural funding, and participation in rounds, seminars and journal clubs.
The successful applicant will be expected to spend 3-4 months per year (1-2 days/week) at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital at Denver, CO conducting biomechanical research and data collection on a multi-center clinical trial on the post-operative kinematic assessment of surgical intervention and rehabilitation of the canine stifle.
Appointment is for 3 or 4 years and subject to acceptable progress.
The starting stipend is $35,000 (plus graduate school tuition).
