MSc & PhD Studentships in Cardiovascular Biomechanics & Finite Element
    Modelling

Joint project in Dublin City University (DCU), Glasnevin, Dublin 9, Ireland
and Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland

Applications are invited for MSc/PhD studentships in Cardiovascular
Biomechanics. The objective of the studentships is to predict vulnerable
plaque rupture in carotid arteries using finite element modelling and tissue
    testing techniques.

Finite element models of real carotid vessel geometries will be generated
from CT images and used to predict the mechanical environment in the
arteries in order to determine the likelihood of plaque rupture. Mechanical
tissue properties will be determined based on excised plaque tissues during
carotid endartectomies and cadaveric tissues. Experience in computational
and experimental cardiovascular biomechanics is therefore an advantage.

The project is funded by a Science Foundation Ireland Research Frontiers
Grant and the studentships are available for suitably qualified EU students.
Proficiency in the English language is necessary (see
    http://www.dcu.ie/registry/english.shtml for English language requirements).

The studentships include full payment of fees and a tax-free maintenance
grant. Applications are invited from individuals, who have a 1st class or
upper 2nd class honours degree, or masters, in Biomedical or Mechanical
Engineering, Physics, Applied Mechanics, Applied Mathematics or a related
    discipline.

All enquiries should be addressed to Dr Caitríona Lally in DCU or Dr Daniel
Kelly in TCD. The studentships are available from September 2007 and
applicants should register their interest as soon as possible by e-mailing
an up-to-date curriculum vitae to Dr Caitríona Lally
(caitriona.lally@dcu.ie) or Dr Daniel Kelly (kellyd9@tcd.ie).

Details of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in DCU and
TCD can be found at http://www.dcu.ie/mechanical_engineering/index.shtml and
