Leon Root, M.D. Post-doctoral Research Fellowship

The Leon Root, M.D. Motion Analysis Laboratory in the Department of
Rehabilitation at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York
City is looking for a highly motivated individual for a post-doctoral
research fellowship. The Hospital for Special Surgery is the leading
Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in the USA and is affiliated with the Weil
College of Medicine of Cornell University. The central philosophy of
the laboratory is to examine the relationship between one's anatomical
and physiological structure and their biomechanical function to improve
our methods of evaluating and treating patients with
neuromusculoskeletal disease. The four areas of focus for our research
are: osteoarthritis, sports science, pediatric orthopedics, and
rehabilitation technologies. Currently funded investigations include a
geometrical model of the forefoot (NIH), the kinematic coupling of wrist
motion during purposeful tasks (OREF), the role of lower extremity
realignment therapies for the treatment of varus knee OA (Ossur),
intra-operative plantar pressure assessment (Salvati Award),
electromyographic patterns of deep rotator cuff injured patients in
response to anterior deltoid therapy (Sports Medicine Institute), and
CMC joint function with OA (NIH). Several new joint coordinate systems,
specialized measurement tools, as well as inverse and forward dynamic
models are in development. Requirements of the position include the
completion of a PhD in biomedical engineering, rehabilitation, or a
related field, proficiency in the theory, design, and implementation of
human movement research, experience in computer programming (e.g.
MatLab, C++, Visual 3D, Labview), excellent communication skills, and
research experience in a field related to the ongoing work of the lab.
The post-doctoral position is for one year and renewable to three years.
The position is available from July 1, 2007 and remains open until the
appropriate candidate is chosen. The Leon Root, M.D. Motion Analysis
Lab (93'x27' + office space) is equipped with a 10-camera MAC motion
capture system, 4 six-component force plates (AMTI, Bertec), a 16
channel MA300 EMG system, a comprehensive suite of Novel plantar
pressure hardware and software (Emed X, Pedar X, and Pliance), a tandem
GaitMatII, instrumented stairs, and several specialized test jigs for
the study of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The lab has both
extramural as well as intramural collaborations including the Soft
Tissue Engineering lab, Biomechanics lab, MRI center, Orthotic and
Prosthetic lab, as well as the Orthopedic, Rheumatology, Radiology,
Physiatry, and Rehabilitation departments at HSS. Interested candidates
are encouraged to send a recent copy of their curriculum vitae, a 1 to 3
page essay of your current and future research plans, and three letters
of reference to: Howard J. Hillstrom, Ph.D., Director of the Leon Root,
M.D. Motion Analysis Laboratory, Department of Rehabilitation, Hospital
for Special Surgery, 535 East 70th Street, New York, N.Y., 10021.
