Postdoctoral Research Assistant - Biomechanical Modelling
Centre for Medical Engineering and Technology
Faculty of Science
University of Hull
This post is to support a BBSRC-funded project between the University of
Hull and Hull-York Medical School (HYMS), concerned with building
computer models to simulate the growth of the facial skeleton in
primates, and thereby understand the complex relationship between
biomechanical forces, soft tissue structures and facial morphology.
The project requires the development of a biomechanical model of the
primate skull to determine the dynamic loading acting on the skulls,
together with finite element (FE) analysis to calculate the resultant
stress and strain fields. In parallel, experimental validation of the
strain distributions will be undertaken to validate the model's results.
Later in the project, our own in-house FE element software will be used
to investigate strain-based adaptation of the skull models in response
to the applied loading.
The successful applicant will have a first degree in engineering or life
sciences, together with a PhD in a relevant engineering or biomechanics
field, or equivalent experience. S/he must have experience of
biomechanical modeling and finite element analysis. S/he will work
closely with two other researchers, one in HYMS who will have
responsibility for providing the necessary quantitative anatomy for the
computer models, and another in Computer Science (at Hull) who will be
undertaking further development of our own FE software.
This is a three year appointment.
